SMD vs COB vs GOB: Which LED Technology is Right for You?

When shopping for an LED video wall, you will encounter three main LED technologies: SMD, COB, and GOB. Each has distinct advantages and trade-offs. Understanding these differences is crucial to selecting the right display for your needs.

What is SMD (Surface-Mounted Device)?

SMD is the most established and widely used LED technology. Individual red, green, and blue LED chips are mounted onto a circuit board in a single package.

Advantages:

  • Most affordable option
  • Mature, proven technology
  • Wide range of pixel pitches available
  • Easy to repair (individual modules can be replaced)

Limitations:

  • LEDs are exposed and can be damaged by physical contact
  • Lower contrast ratio compared to COB
  • Not ideal for environments with heavy foot traffic

Best for: Corporate lobbies, churches, event stages, retail displays where the screen is not within arm's reach.

What is COB (Chip-on-Board)?

COB technology bonds LED chips directly onto the circuit board without individual packaging. This creates a smoother, more uniform surface with superior visual quality.

Advantages:

  • Superior contrast ratio and colour uniformity
  • Wider viewing angles (up to 180°)
  • Better heat dissipation and energy efficiency
  • More durable surface — resistant to bumps and moisture
  • Ideal for fine pixel pitch (P0.9 – P1.5)

Limitations:

  • Higher upfront cost (30-50% more than SMD)
  • Repairs require specialised equipment
  • Fewer manufacturers, so lead times may be longer

Best for: Boardrooms, control rooms, premium retail, museums, and any application requiring close-up viewing with exceptional image quality.

What is GOB (Glue-on-Board)?

GOB is essentially SMD technology with an added protective layer — a transparent epoxy resin is applied over the LED surface, creating a smooth, sealed finish.

Advantages:

  • Significantly more durable than standard SMD
  • Moisture-proof, dust-proof, and impact-resistant
  • Maintains the visual quality of SMD
  • More affordable than COB while offering better protection

Limitations:

  • Slightly reduced brightness compared to bare SMD
  • Repair is more complex than standard SMD
  • The glue layer can affect colour temperature if not applied correctly

Best for: High-traffic environments, children's areas, outdoor-adjacent installations, and anywhere the screen may be touched or bumped.

How to Choose

  1. Budget-conscious? Go with SMD — it delivers excellent performance at the best price point.
  2. Need premium quality? COB is the gold standard for boardrooms, control rooms, and premium installations.
  3. High-traffic area? GOB gives you SMD-level pricing with significantly better durability.
  4. Outdoor use? Standard outdoor SMD panels with IP65 rating are typically the best choice.
